Ask Wolfram Alpha about half value layer

Post by Sesselmann » 04 Apr 2018, 11:45

Hi Guys,

Did you know that you can ask Wolfram Alpha to calculate the half value layer of lead ?

Some of these online tools make life too easy..

That's a much better way to explain why I use a 10mm thick tungsten shield in addition to my 24mm thick lead shield around my detector.

Nice work Geoff,

Great for designing a shield, one can easily calculate the best options with available materials. If you don't have any Cd or Sn you can effectively compensate for this by using more copper or something like that.

Hi Geoff,
do you put the tungsten layer inside or outside the lead?

My tungsten is inside of the lead. For the detector shield its lead-tungsten-copper for the source shield its lead-tin-copper

hello,
I have made a small program to calculate the absorption of some materials.
