BaF2 scintillator???

Post by tim.hbn » 22 Aug 2021, 06:30

Hi Everyone

What do you all think of BaF2 as a scintillator for gamma spectoscopy?

I have read that it is temperature independent.

Do any of you know what FWMH can be achieved with BaF2 scintillators?

Thank you very much.

Kind regards

Tim

Due to its very low photon yield, and even lower photoelectron yield BaF2 isn't very good for gamma spectroscopy. You'd be lucky to reach 10% FWHM.
It's dense and therefor makes a very efficient detector, just without much resolution for uncharged particles. Where it really shines is in its timing capabilities, as the fast component is less than 1 ns, enabeling fast triggers, ultra high rate counting and the likes.
The lanthanide halide scintillators are very good for high rez spectroscopy if you also want fast timing, but they still are in the single digit ns range, not < ns.

Hi GigaBecquerel

Thank you very much for another very informative reply.

To be honest, I am not really looking for fast timing.

The thing that drew me towards BaF2 is its temperature independence. However, from what you have said, its disadvantages rule it out for me.

Do you know how well lanthanide halide scintillators perform under variable temperatures?

I can't seem to find anywhere on the Internet where one can puchase lanthanide halide scintillators. Do you know where I can purchase them?

Thank you very much.

Kind regards

Tim

Hi GigaBecquerel

Thank you very much. In giving me the formula (LaBr), you have very much helped my Google searches. As a result, I have found the following PDF:

The top graph on Page 7 tells me exactly what I am looking for.

Thank you very much.
