My name is Aaron Burhoe. I am an amateur rock collector. Professionally, I am a machinist. As an offshoot to rock collecting I've begun tinkering with scintillation detectors. I live in Sonora California, USA.

Hello Aaron,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for the intro. Pretty sure we have a number of mineral collectors here and yes gamma spectroscopy will just take you further down that rabbit hole.
You can definitely get a feel for gamma spectroscopy without spending a fortune and it will give you another insight into what your minerals contain.

Welcome Aaron!
I'm also in California, though nearer the coast.
As an offshoot of gamma spectroscopy, I've been tinkering with some rock collecting. My focus is primarily on Trinitite, which may not meet everyone's definition of rock, but it has a really interesting gamma spectrum.
