Hello from Bavaria/Germany

Hello,

my name is Nicolai, I am 48 years old, married - two kids (two boys), and I am a typical nerd-dad. We live here south of of Germany, in Bavaria, near Rosenheim.

The last years I have been doing a lot of astrophotography and since half a year I have been diving into the field of radiation and gamma-spectrometry. I do this also to engage my youngest son into science topics, to spark the flame of interest in this fascinating world around us. With astrophotography I could not raise any interest, but with radioactivity my boy really has a blast, running around in museums, looking for spicy items with his Radiacode.

My background: I am a chemist, did my PHD in supramolecular structures, did a lot of research on dyes, lipids, controlled release etc.....so not so much with radioactivity. But the basics I have.
In our arsenal we have the RC110 and the KC761C. So only rather small handheld devices.

But the plan is to purchase a larger CsI - detector, preferably from Gammaspectacular - waiting for my bonus check so I can pull the trigger.

So I am eager to learn from you much more experienced folks - thank you for accepting my registration here.

Welcome to the forum, great to have you here, and great to hear that you are inspiring your kids to do science. I tried to do the same with my three boys, but sometimes it is not so cool to do what dad does 😎, so they are mostly into computers.

The atom is the last frontier of understanding, despite all the quantum mechanics and fundamental forces of the standard model, I think the atom is till a mystery - The emission and absorption of a photon at the fundamental level is still a puzzle to me.
