Hello Gamma Enthousiasts

Post by Nephrondoctor » 18 May 2015, 04:09

Hello Gamma Enthousiasts,
My name is Alfred Apperloo, I live in the Netherlands , Europe. Gamma spectrometry is one of my hobbies. My profession is kidney specialist (acute and chronic renal failure, kidney transplantation, nephrotic syndrome, ICU, hypertension etc.) In the past, I used 125 Iodine and 131 Iodine isotopes intravenously to accurately study renal perfusion and glomerular filtration rate in patients with renal diseases and healthy volunteers. I titrated their blood and urine samples myself to yield maximal accuracy.
This sparked my interest for radioactivity. A few years ago I crafted my first gamma spectrometry setup. I used my ThermoScientific Electra rate meter with a Bicron scintillator. I connected a simple capacitor to the HV output of the Electra with a T-piece and connected this signal to the PC soundcard with PRA running. Resolution and linearity were mediocre but I was agitated that it appeared possible to obtain a gamma spectrum with only very simple equipment. A few month later I was able to register far better spectra using a 2x2 inch NaI probe from Scionix combined with GammaSpectacular 1100A and an external USB soundcard adapter, E-MU 0204. Shortly thereafter I got the GG2012, a low budget portable MCA, with outstanding performance in combination with the Scionix probe.

Alfred,

Welcome to the new forum, and thanks for the nice introduction. I never actually knew what kind of work you did, sounds very interesting. Hope to hear more about the GG2012 and how it compares with the sound card method.

Hi Luuk,

Still hesitating. I did not find a good PMT for it yet and price remains rather high.
Best regards, Alfred
