Success at last. Replaced my cable with a 3 foot APR RG-58 from Ham Radio Outlet. Now I get results and they are repeatable results.
Had started data acquisition and was watching it build slowly. Pulled off a lead bar and placed my smoke detector part inside and HELLO THERE!! These two bumps eagerly popped up!
If the tall one the 59.54 from 241Am, what's the little one? Ka shell x-ray fluorescence? From the lead?
What a difference a cable makes.

Hi! You should be able to see gammas at 26 and 33 (thereabout). Also some higher energy ones, but I can't recall them at the moment.
