Yes it melts away, and it's also worth mentioning that NaI(Tl) is extremely corrosive. A few years ago I was trying to open a sealed aluminium detector by cutting it open in my lathe, this was a pretty bad idea, because it jammed and broke the crystal, which shattered, and bits landed all over the lathe. I swept up the mess with a brush and a dust pan, disposed of it in the rubbish bin, and gave up working for the day.
When I came back to use the lathe two days later, this is what I found.

Wow, that lathe looked nearly completely ruind, I almost feel sorry for it
Yes, NaI(Tl) is very corrosive but the same effect you will get if you put salt on your lathe
and leave it there for some day, the humidity will do the rest.
Trying to open a detector with a lathe is easy to do.
The trick is that you don’t turn the lathe on! I sound maybe crazy but I opened many detectors as follows;
you fix the detector in the chunk preferable a 4 claw but 3 claw is also possible, and support it on the other side and so it will stay stable in the lathe and put the gear in free, use a sharp cut-off blade and simply turn the chunk by hand while pressing carefully the blade to the detector, it may take some extra time but an aluminium can will be cut this way in 2-4 minutes and you keep full control on the process!
No broken crystals or pmt’s all can be simply removed and re-used.

Yes I learned this the hard way, now I do it excactly what you suggest, turning the lathe by hand, and that works, when I am almost through, I just use a Stanley knife to cut through the rest. As for the lathe, I sprayed it with WD40 and gave it a good cleanup, and it's still usable.
Hopefully this post will save someone else making the same mistake.
