Wisconsin checking in

Post by GetSirius » 06 Dec 2024, 07:36

Hello from Mineral Point, Wisconsin, USA. My name is Chuck and am becoming interested in gamma spectroscopy, obtained my first NaI(Tl) detector and am getting to know it and Theremino software/hardware.

I have been working with old school transistor electronics for most of my life, on and off. Like to build different projects, started with many different things when I was very young, then ham radio homebrew almost 50 years ago (NX9V), and recently have found interest in radiation detectors. In recent years I have made several different Geiger counters. Nothing very modern, just transistors and sometimes some logic chips. Our business is an art glass studio, stained glass and torchwork. I sometimes incorporate my electronics with glass art, Geiger counters, lightning detectors, a couple of digital clocks using self made etched glass displays, things like that.

I have been lurking here for a while now but soon I may need advice on making a shield for my NaI(Tl) probe. So far I have about 50 pounds of scrap lead came, some 5mil copper foil, and 2 inch copper pipe to work with. Probably will not actually have time for this until January.

Hello Chuck,

Great to have you onboard, sorry to put you through the complicated sign up process, but it is becoming increasingly important to keep bots and scammers out of the forum. Real people with real names sharing ideas they believe in.

It looks like you are doing a bit of scientific glass blowing...., a skill I would love to learn. I used to get some glass blowing done for my fusor experiments by Custom-Blown Glassware Pty Ltd in Sydney.

Please contribute and share your projects, that's what makes the forum interesting.

Steven

I do mostly artistic glass work, but use the same tools and glass. Scientific glass workers sometimes come in the shop and say they are impressed but can't do what I do. I tell them the same, as scientific glass work is not easy!
