Ortec 113 Preamp Wiring

Post by sgt_bear » 29 Jul 2021, 03:10

Hi Folks,

Some might have notices that I've acquired a HPGE, and standalone MCA as well. Now i would also like to use that MCA with my Scintillation Detectors. I found a document that for this, there is the need of a Ortec 113 Preamp. I acquired one.

Now I'm unsure how to connect this to the Scintillation probe.

It has a front BNC labeled input, and back BNC labeled Output. The output must be connected to the input of the MCA. When i opened the device, i spotted a 10nF capacitor, which is followed by a switchable cap array.

My Scintillation detectors are "single connection", I've also seen some adapter boxes with a capacitor for detectors that have separate signal and HV. But what i wonder here, if the capacitor in the device already provides this function, so that basically only a Y-Cable from the detector is needed - OR - if i also need an adapter box with capacitor.

Any suggestions?

Jonathan,

As the preamplifier has a simple BNC I imagine it does not provide a voltage bias, so you are going to need a splitter with a coupling.

Pretty simple box, HV in followed a 1M resistor inline with the positive to HV out, then a 10n capacitor coupling off the detector side of the resistor to the signal output.

Hi Steven,

Okay, this seems fairly easy to build. I was just wondering if there is only a splitter and 1Meg needed, because the input already has a 10n, 3kV capacitor on it. So maybe the use that to just invert the voltage
